The UN defines racial discrimination as " ... any distinction, exclusion, restriction or preference based on race, colour, descent, or national or ethnic origin which has the purpose or effect of nullifying or impairing the recognition, enjoyment or exercise, on an equal footing, of human rights and fundamental freedoms in the political, economic, social, cultural, or any other field of public life."
According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary Racism is "the belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race."

At the end of the term each group will present their their aspect to the class over the course of one period. These presentations will take three classes to go through as each class will be devoted to one aspect. (This lesson should be done with students in the higher grade levels-grades 11 or 12)
Group 1: Institutionalized RacismGroup 1 will be tasked with finding the definition of Institutionalized racism and examples. Then, they will go on to find different movie clips or documentary clips to help the class understand what distinguishes this type of racism from the rest. Their final presentation will be up to them, they can be as creative as they want so long as the rest of the class understands the concept of institutionalized racism.
